ECDL Foundation
The Foundation Level ECDL (equivalent to an NVQ Level 2) is designed to cover the key concepts of computing, its practical applications and their use in the workplace. The ECDL certification consists of seven modules covering topics ranging from basic IT concepts to database use. Each module is followed by an assessment.

Award of the ECDL certification is given on completion of all seven assessments, the modules are:

Module 1 - Concepts of information technology
Module 2 - Using the computer and managing files
Module 3 - Word processing
Module 4 - Spreadsheets
Module 5 - Database
Module 6 - Presentation
Module 7 - Information and communication

The START Certificate
The completion of any four of the above listed modules will result in a START Certificate being awarded. A common combination of modules requested by employers is:

Basic concepts of IT
Using the computer and managing files
Word processing
Information and communication.

All modules for both the ECDL and START qualification can be taken in any order.
